DU students reflect on off-campus living

In this audio slideshow, I photographed and interviewed Logan Meyers, a junior at DU. I put together a mix of pictures and videos of the U House apartment and tried to make the living space look cozy and comfy. I asked Logan questions about how living off campus is different for him from living on campus dorms. He explains how he likes to have his own freedom and privacy to do what he wants. He also likes that he has his own kitchen space because he is an avid cooker. With the videos, I tried to capture the aspect of being able to be able to connect with the DU community as well as be able to have your own space by walking to and from it. I wanted to add’s Logan’s hobbies as well and get as many people as possible into my slideshow.

I also wanted to capture how there is community within off campus housing. I took pictures of welcome doormats, peace and love signs, and even the front desk staff who are always happy and welcoming. I also put in my roomate and Logan’s roomate as well to add that you can also have your own friendships in the apartments, while also having your own room. I also took pictures of decorations such as my desk with my dogs in there as well as Logan’s Murakami picture as well. I also wanted to capture the beauty of living off campus, as this is all from the fourth floor so you have a very nice view of the green trees and Denver skyline.

I chose the certain photos and videos i did because I wanted to capture the DU experience from afar (well not really afar). As you can see in the video, I tried to link a photo to what Logan was saying. I wanted to keep the story flowing and wanted everything to have a meaning. I think it also makes the slideshow look cleaner and more put together and not just random photos being placed in. Again, I think adding a lot of people into my slideshow makes it less individual/lonesome and I like how they all turned out.

Sadly, what didn’t work out, was that I think being so specific in my theme made it harder to get different pictures. Because it is such a closed of space I did what I could to take as many pleasing pictures as I could, but I still think I should’ve picked a different theme that has more action and entertainment. Though, I did like adding the videos of the DU students and the outsides of the apartment. That also does lead to how short the video is, I know it’s supposed to reach a certain limit, but it was rather hard to capture a photo and link it to the interview audio. I also tried to cut down on audio, because there was some long pauses in between, but it was hard for me to do.

In the future, I think if I chose a more fun and out there topic that had many different perspectives or interpretations, it would be easier and more fun for me to create. I often had a lot fo creators block of how to make this video seem more fun and exciting and I wish I didn’t have such a hard time trying to do that because it took the fun away from learning a new useful tool..
