Study settings around DU and if food affects student’s choices

The topic of my audio slideshow is related to study habits of college students. Particularly, it covers such questions as where students like studying better – on the campus or somewhere else and if food plays a factor. Moreover, the slideshow touches upon various types of the environment conducive to productive study process. In this case, I aimed at showing different kinds of atmosphere through photos, which means that students choose different environments depending on their personality or preferences regarding a certain subject or situation. It was interesting to combine two types of places where students like studying, i.e., the library and the café. The slideshow reveals that there are both quiet spaces at campus and more dynamic ones outside of it that attract students depending on their needs, workload and mood. It also highlighted in my interview of DU student that students seem to gravitate towards more of food setting when they do study off campus.

Photographing such places was a good choice for several reasons. Firstly, the chosen photos represented those locations where many students study regularly. Secondly, the pictures revealed the differences between atmosphere of different environments. There were no captions necessary because everything could be seen and understood by viewing photos. As for the arrangement of the slides, they moved from quiet to noisy places, thus reflecting the shift from campus spaces to off-campus ones. Additionally, there was an interview of a student who explained her preference of particular atmosphere to complete certain tasks. Ambient sound was added in order to place the viewer into the certain environment. Typing sounds were included in order to give sense of quietness. Moreover, the noise of the café created atmosphere typical of this place.

Integrating sounds and texts involved some attempts to adjust volume. However, the final result proved to be rather impressive because all elements complemented each other quite well. It appeared that capturing ambient sounds and candid photos was helpful in creating an authentic audio slideshow. What challenged during this process was that it was not quite easy to match the timing of slides with audio. The main thing I should do differently is to collect more responses from various students in order to make the story richer in terms of perspectives. Another important lesson for me is that when selecting photos, I have to choose only those that help to build a story.
