For my audio slideshow, I chose to focus on my two roommates who are both involved in the University of Denver theater department’s Senior Capstone Play Festival.
I chose this topic because I found it really interesting, and I also wanted to support my roommates and highlight all the hard work they put into their performances. My roommate Bianca Bair played Amy in the play After You, which was directed by senior director Rhianna Lewis. My other roommate, Shaya Scales, performed in the play The Fame, directed by senior director Luke Sewpersaud, where she played the role of Ambition. Through my photos, videos, and interviews, I wanted to tell the story of what it is like being involved in a theater production and reveal some of the behind the scenes work that the audience doesn’t see.
I photographed and filmed what I did because it made the most sense with the context of the interviews and the questions I was asking. I used audio and text throughout the slideshow to help explain who I was interviewing, their roles in the plays, and to give the audience background information about the questions being asked. I also tried to organize the videos in a way that flowed naturally with the interview audio so viewers could understand the story being told. One thing that was difficult during this project was shooting B-roll footage in a dark theater room. I was worried my flash would accidentally go off during the performances, so a lot of the visuals I used ended up being videos instead of photos. Through this project, I learned that I still need a lot more practice when it comes to shooting photos and videos, especially in difficult lighting situations. Additionally, I realized I need more help and experience working with Adobe Premiere Pro. I want to continue learning so my next project can flow more smoothly and look way better. Next time, I would probably choose a broader topic that would allow me to capture images and videos in more diverse ways.
